काम की तलाश में अफगानिस्तान से पहुंचा था मुंबई
करीम लाला अफगानिस्तान में पैदा हुआ था। वह पश्तून था और करीब 21 साल की आयु में काम की तलाश में भारत आया था। 1930 में पेशावर से मुंबई (तत्कालीन बंबई) पहुंचकर उसने छोटे मोटे काम धंधे करना शुरू किया लेकिन उसे यह रास नहीं आया।
करीम लाला घर से संपन्न था और उसे ज्यादा पैसा कमाने की बहुत चाहत थी। इसके लिए उसने अपराध की दुनिया में कदम रखा। सबसे पहले उसने मुंबई के ग्रांट रोड स्टेशन के पास एक मकान किराए पर लेकर उसमें सोशल क्लब नाम से जूए का अड्डा खोला। इस क्लब ने देखते ही देखते मुंबई में अपनी धाक जमा ली।
उसके इस क्लब में जुआ खेलने मुंबई के कई नामी गिरामी सेठ आते थे। जहां से उसकी जान-पहचान भी बनने लगी। जुए के अलावा उसने मुंबई पोर्ट पर कीमती गहनों, सोने, हीरों की तस्करी में भी हाथ आजमाया। आजादी के पहले तक उसने इस धंधे से बहुत पैसा कमाया।

Senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Wednesday claimed that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi used to come to meet yesteryear don Karim Lala in Mumbai.
Recalling days of the underworld in Mumbai, Raut, who was earlier a journalist, said gangsters like Dawood Ibrahim, Chhota Shakeel and Sharad Shetty used to have control over the metropolis and adjoining areas.
They used to decide who will be the police commissioner, who will sit in 'Mantralaya' (secretariat), Raut said in an interview to a media group during its award function here.
"When Haji Mastan used to come to 'Mantralaya', the entire 'Mantralaya' would come down to see him. Indira Gandhi used to come to meet Karim Lala in Pydhonie (in south Mumbai)," claimed Raut, whose party formed a coalition government with the NCP and Congress in Maharashtra last year.
Veteran crime journalist Baljeet Parmar, who has spent years crisscrossing police stations and speaking to criminals, has now spoken about Karim Lala and the underworld don's connection with Indira Gandhi which has become an ugly rhetoric between the BJP and Congress - both accusing each other of having underworld connections.
Baljeet Parmar had first met Karim Lala at the Dongri Police Station where the underworld don was being interrogated by the police for setting a stable on fire so that a building could be constructed there by a businessman.
There does exist a picture of the meeting between Indira Gandhi and Karim Lala. It is a black-and-white picture in which Indira Gandhi is seen with Padma Bhushan recipient Harindranath Chattopadhyay and Karim Lala.
In the early 1970s, it was well-known that Karim Lala had a big hold on the unorganised Bollywood that was flourishing with his help.
His kangaroo courts sorted out financial and even personal issues for many Bollywood personalities and that is probably why there are pictures of Karim Lala with veteran actors such as Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Shashi Kapoor and many others.

Karim Lala always wore the Pathania suit. He had told Baljeet Parmar that even though there were many pictures of him with Bollywood celebrities, he never watched films as sitting for three hours at one place was not possible for him.
Baljeet Parmar recalls that he had gone to Karim Lala's office in Dongri to meet him where he saw a big album that had Karim Lala's pictures with Bollywood celebrities and one with Indira Gandhi too. When Parmar asked him about it, Karim Lala told him that since he had not seen the Rashtrapati Bhavan or ever met a prime minister, he tagged along with Harindranath Chattopadhyay when he was awarded the Padma Bhushan.
In 1973, Harindranath Chattopadhyay was awarded the Padma Bhushan for his immense contribution to cinema. It was here that Harindranath Chattopadhyay introduced Karim Lala to Indira Gandhi.

Unlike other underworld dons, Karim Lala did not go to jail during the Emergency.
Karim Lala, according to Baljeet Parmar, had been in and out of police stations many times because of his illegal activities. But during the Emergency, when many underworld dons like Haji Mastan and others who were operating in Mumbai were sent to jail, Karim Lala was spared. This too had fuelled the fire about his connection to the Congress.
However, according to Baljeet Parmar, Karim Lala was spared only because he was not a smuggler, unlike other underworld gang leaders who had their income coming from smuggling gold, silver and other valuable materials.
"Karim Lala used to run liquor and gambling joints. There was prohibition in Maharashtra around that time. His work stretched on for four decades because there was no other competitor before him but he did not have any other illegitimate business," recounts Baljeet Parmar while stressing that it was the only reason why he was spared during Emergency.

करीम लाला मुंबई का अंडरवर्ल्ड डॉन (mumbai underworld don) रहा पठान गैंग का मुखिया था। करीम साल 1911 में अफगानिस्तान के कुनार प्रांत में पैदा हुआ था। लेकिन उसकी बादशाहत मुंबई में चलती थी। करीम लाला पश्तून समुदाय का आखिरी राजा भी कहा जाता है। पश्तून समुदाय का अफगानिस्तान में अलग ही भौकाल था। परिवार अफगानिस्तान में कारोबार करता था। लेकिन करीम अपनी किस्मत का सिक्का चमकाने भारत आ गया। करीम लाला का असली नाम अब्दुल करीम शेर खान था। शेर खान भारत आया और सपनों की नगरी मुंबई पर छा गया। उस दौर में मुबंई बंबई हुआ करती थी।

लोगों का मानना है कि मुंबई अंडरवर्ल्ड (mumbai underworld don) का पहला डॉन हाजी मस्तान मिर्जा था। वहीं मिर्जा जिसपर अजय देवगन ने फिल्म भी बनाई है। लेकिन ये बात सच नहीं है। जानकार बताते हैं कि सबसे पहला माफिया डॉन करीम लाला था।
